π Are you struggling to fire one or both of your glutei med? Me too! My left one gives me a hard time, and it's not without consequence. It contributes to a hip shift and it causes inappropriate muscles to compensate, which leads to pain, spasm, and tightness.
FIGHT BACK WITH ISOMETRICS: next time you use the hip abductor ("bad girl") machine at the gym, try doing isometric holds. You are doing it right if you feel a lot of heat in the glutei med muscle. I hold throughout various ranges of the movement. Once I feel my glutei med firing, I do reps through the full range of motion until I feel like I'm going to burst into flames.
Do not hold your breath! Do nasal breathing (inhale nose, exhale nose).
